The Chinese Baseball League is the top level of baseball in China although the league is relatively new to the baseball scene after being founded just 7 years ago in 2002. The league is often confused with the Chinese Professional Baseball League which is based in Taiwan and has fewer teams competing for the title. Since 2007 the Chinese Baseball League has shared close links with the Nippon Professional League in Japan, which allows Japanese clubs to send coaches and players to China to improve the standard of the game as well as many clubs forming links with different Japanese clubs.

The Chinese Baseball League is split into two divisions, the Southwest/North division and Southeast/East division. The Beijing Tigers, Sichuan Dragons and Tianjin Lions make up the stronger Southwest/North division whilst the Guangdong Leopards, Jiangsu Hopestars and Shanghai Golden Eagles make up the Southwest/North division.

The CBL has been dominated by the presence of the Beijing Tigers and Tianjin Lions with the two sides claiming all of the 7 titles in history, with only the Guangdong Leopards breaking the two sides dominance by reaching the 2006 and 2007 playoff finals. The Lions are historically the strongest side with 4 CBL titles to their name with 3 successive titles, whilst the Lions have 3 titles.

The winner of the CBL then goes on to represent China in the Asia Series and the 2008 Asia Series saw the first ever winners of the league go on to represent China at the series, rather than the usual China All-Star side with the Tianjin Lions competing in Tokyo.
