The KBO was founded in 1982 and has grown in stature over the years and now includes 8 teams from all over South Korea. The KBO is made up of one league, where the 8 teams play each other 18 times resulting in 126 games in the regular season. Teams are commonly named after the companies that own them with the league being made up of the: Doosan Bears, Hanwa Eagles, Kia Tigers, Lotte Giants, LG Twins, Samsung Lions, SK Wyverns and Woori Heroes.

The league is increasingly becoming more popular in South Korea and is gaining more respect from the Asian baseball population, with many top players moving on to Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan where the sport is at its highest.

The KBO season finishes with the Korean Series, from which the top four teams can compete in at the end of the season. After the regular season has ended the teams that finished 4^th and 3^rd will compete in the first round of the playoffs, the winner of that game will then go on to meet the team that finished 2^nd after the regular season. The winner of that game will then go on to the Korean Series where they will meet the team that finished 1^st in the regular season, whilst the 1^st placed team gains home advantage as well.

The SK Wyverns are currently the Korean Series championship for the second year running after the saw off the challenge of 2^nd placed Doosan Bears 4-1, just a year after the Wyverns beat the bears 4-2 in the 2007 Korean Series. The SK Wyverns then went on to represent South Korea at the Asian Series, failing to make the final like last year.
