The World Baseball Classic 2009 is a international baseball tournament that follows the successful inaugural World Baseball Classic of 2006, which was the first international tournament to showcase players from the top leagues all over the world.

The tournament begins on the5^th of March with the final taking place on the 23^rd March 2009 at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The 16 nations taking part in the tournament are split into four pools of four teams each and will take part in a double-elimination format of play, meaning teams are only guaranteed a minimum of two games each. Pool A ties will be held in Tokyo, Japan; Pool B ties in Mexico City, Mexico; Pool C ties in Toronto, Canada and Pool D ties in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

After Round 1 of the pools the top two teams from each pool will then progress to Round 2 and split into two pools consisting of the former pools A+B and C+D, which will be held solely on American soil. The new Pool 1 will have its ties take place at PETCO Park in San Diego whilst Pool 2 will be held at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

The winner of each pool will then face the runner-up of the opposing pool meaning that the Pools finally cross over, unlike the 2006 World Baseball Classic. The finals will all be single elimination matches and will all be held at the Dodgers Stadium in LA.

Pre-tournament favourites are likely to be the powerhouse nations of USA and Japan, where Major League Baseball dominates whilst the Nippon Professional League is attracting more and more respect.
