The Pirates have not had much success at all over the past few years, but even with that said they took things a step further in 2009 as they finished with a record under .500 for the 17^th straight season. There are many that feel that the Pirates ownership is solely focused on making money and could rarely care about winning. That is why there was so much fanfare and excitement in the offseason over the possibility of Pittsburgh favourite Mario Lemieux putting in an offer for the team.

However, the Lemieux offer was flat out rejected by management and there are many that feel that means at least a few more years of futility. The struggling rotation that consists of Paul Maholm as the top starter was not improved over the offseason and the offense simply does not have the ability to keep up with the other teams within their division. There are positives such as the fact that Ross Ohlendorf has shown improvement as a pitcher over the past few years and hope that someone like Zach Duke can bounce back and pick up some wins over the season.
