New York Yankees Thrilling Streak

Melky CabreraThe New York Yankees had more than an exciting weekend this past weekend, they had one so amazing that they are heading towards history. Crazy finishes to games and exciting celebrations have become routine as the Yankees pulled off three late inning games in a row. While the old Yankee stadium will always be remembered for heroics and memorable moments, there was never anything like this. After Johnny Damon hit a tenth inning home run last night, the team pulled away with their third straight walk off victory. This is something that has not happened since 1972.

While walk off wins are thrilling many of the players and fans are hoping for something a little more relaxing from here on in. Not to sure if the diehard Yankees fans could take much more of the nail biters in a row, but of course they will take the win, no questions asked.

This historic streak began on Friday night against the Minnesota Twins thanks to a two run single from Melky Cabrera to put the team up for good at 5-4. The very next afternoon Alex Rodriguez smashed an 11th inning home run to give the Yankees a 6-4 victory over the Twins. While both nights were memorable and exciting it was last nights game that was historic. Damon made it the first time since 1972 that the Yankees had come away with three walk off victories in a row.

The Yankees are really starting to mesh with each other, as was expected right out of the gate this year. The pitching is starting to become as consistent as they expected and the clutch hitting is coming around thanks to the return of Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and soon, Jorge Posada. Young stud pitchers like Joba Chamberlain are starting to become household names and big free agent pitchers C.C Sabathia and A.J Burnett are finally starting to pitch like they are capable of. Once this team is fully healthy and in a winning routine, the entire league will have to take notice and playing against them will not be fun for anyone.

While these victories are a part of history, the team will need two more victories like this in order to really cement themselves into the record books. The MLB record is five straight walk off victories and is held by the Houston Astros back in 1986. Whether the Yankees will be able to keep of this string of exciting wins together remains to be seen. However, the one fact is that the Yankees are playing well once again and that everyone is starting to take notice. If they keep this up and keep getting consistent play, it may not be long until the Yankees are once again the cream of the crop in the AL East.
