Saturday was full of close games in MLB action and there was plenty of excitement to go around. There seems to be quite a bit of parity in the league this year and a number of surprising teams competing with the consistently strong ones. Let us take a look back at some of the Inter-league action that you could have witnessed right here on WatchLiveBaseball.com.
The New York Mets continued to surge and once again toppled the Boston Red Sox on Saturday thanks to a video reviewed home run by a score of 3-2. The Mets can attribute their win to some incredible defensive plays in the 9th inning and timely hitting from unlikely sources such as Omir Santos. The Red Sox seem unable to get used to the NL style of play and sorely miss their designated hitter spot.
The New York Yankees pulled off yet another stunning walk off victory as centre fielder Melky Cabrera produced his third game winning hit of the season. The Yankees won by a score of 5-4 against the Philadelphia Phillies in game 2 of their 3 game series. After losing the first game of the series the powerful Yankees are right back on track.
The San Diego Padres put behind the controversy involving a potential trade of Jake Peavy and extended their winning streak to 8 games. The Padres stopped the Chicago Cubs and are well on their way to climbing into the top spot of their division.
In another exciting game on Saturday the Oakland Athletics managed to squeak by in the 11th inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The victory can be credited to Jason Giambi on a monumental night as he slammed his 400th career home run. It was an exciting night overall for both Giambi and the A's as they look to turn their up and down season around.
Young stud pitcher Matt Cain threw a complete game gem against the Seattle Mariners as the San Francisco Giants pulled out a win on Saturday. Juan Uribe socked a three game double in the eighth inning to give Cain all the support he needed in a 5 to 1 victory. The Giants needed a victory but the Mariners probably needed it more as they are slowly slipping out of contention even with a promising young lineup.
The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to soar even without Manny Ramirez in the line up as they just got by the Angels of Anaheim in extra innings. Juan Pierre managed to get a bases loaded walk in the 10th inning as the Dodgers literally walked away with a 5-4 victory in an exciting game. The Dodgers look unstoppable at times and once Manny Ramirez returns they could be poised to take a run at the World Series this year.
Each of these series is still underway and provided excellent mid season baseball action. With the amount of exciting games, walk off victories and clutch performances we have already seen, 2009 is shaping up to be an excellent year for baseball.
