As if steroids were not already a big enough issue throughout Major League Baseball. As if there was not already enough news revolving Alex Rodriguez, a player that is not even playing right now due to injury. Here we go again.
A new rather unflattering biography about Yankee superstar Alex Rodriguez has surfaced and makes some pretty bold accusations. The main source of controversy is the rumor that has come about that Rodriguez was purchasing and using anabolic steroids as early as high school. Baseball itself has been drastically tarnished over the years thanks to steroid allegations involving role models like Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa. This is just another tick against the sport that is supposed to be part of the American lifestyle. Millions of children look up to and respect players like Alex Rodriguez and it is appalling to think of the example that is being set for our nation's young minds.
Rodriguez himself admitted to using steroids while he was a member of the Texas Rangers from 2001 to 2003. He has constantly insisted that he stop using before he was traded to the New York Yankees in 2004. He has refused to comment on the new upcoming book and has brushed off any new allegations that have surfaced. Rodriguez has stated that he is solely focused on rehabbing and get back into game situations. Of course the media frenzy that surrounds him will not subside, at least until further proof is found or further questions are answered.
As if the steroid rumors are not enough, the book also calls out Rodriguez for being an eccentric egomaniac that is constantly needy and demands respect and praise from his teammates. This is the same man that tipped off pitches to his teammates in hope that the favor would be returned to him in the future. It is clear to see that this is yet another MLB superstar that refuses to put anyone or anything before himself. Essentially, this is what the world of pro sports has come to and it has left a lot of baseball fans stuck in a deafening silence. Will this constant shame and existence of saddening personalities within the sport ever go away? Maybe. Will fans still tune in to watch the game with all the passion that they had before? Of course. Yet, do changes need to be made to ensure that the MLB is a league that is family friendly and thus can build steadily towards the future? Definitely. Sports is a place for role models. It needs to be used as an outlet for young minds and a place where dreams and aspirations can be built upon. Without that, all we have left is a bat, a pair of cleats and a ball.
