However, Atlanta came out on top with a 2-1 victory thanks in large part to a dominating start from Javier Vasquez. Vasquez pitched a solid 7 innings of work allowing just 1 run on five hits and striking out 6. He was almost outdone by Carlos Zambrano who was pitching on short rest thanks to an injury to Cubs starter Ryan Dempster. Zambrano pitched a solid 6 innings allowing just two runs and striking out six. However those two runs were more than enough for Vasquez and the Braves.

Atlanta got the offense they needed from catcher Brian McCann who had two hits and both of the RBI’s in the game. With the victory Atlanta has crawled within 4 games in the NL East and look to make a push back into contention. They lost three straight games heading into this series and need to turn things around as soon as possible, or else the Philadelphia Phillies could run away with the division. In the NL Central the Cubs find themselves in a similar situation as they now sit 5 games back in the division. The injury to Dempster will not help matters for the team and they need to come on strong if they want to compete for a playoff spot.
