One of the big, bright spots on the year for the Florida Marlins has been the play of starting pitcher Josh Johnson. Thus, a lot of pressure was put on Johnson to try and get something going for the Marlins on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants. He turned in a complete performance but was bested by Giants left, Barry Zito. The Marlins just could not get anything going offensively as they fell by a score of 3-0.

Overall, one night after being named to the NL All Star team, Johnson allowed three runs over seven innings but was saddled with the loss thanks to Florida’s poor offensive showing. The Giants were able to score first in the game as Randy Winn lead off in the 4th inning with a double and was knocked in by Bengie Molina. The Marlins were only able to get two base runners on board in the first five innings as Zito was on top of his game. Juan Uribe put the game out of reach in the 5th inning as he pulled a two run homer into the left field bleachers. Even though Johnson was able to retire five straight batters after that, all the damage had been done.

With the loss the Marlins fell two games back in the NL East as they try to catch the surging Philadelphia Phillies. Even though the Giants have now won two games in a row, they still sit 7 games back in their division as the LA Dodgers are running away with the division. On Wednesday, July 8th the Giants will send Ryan Sadowski to the mound and the Marlins will counter with Chris Volstad.
