Even though Fernano Nieve is unproven and hadn’t made a Major League start since 2006, he was solid for the New York Mets on Saturday. Rushed into action to replace injured starter John Maine, Nieve allowed four hits and just two runs against the powerful New York Yankees over just under 7 innings. Andy Pettitte was not his usual reliable self as he allowed a season high 12 hits and five runs over just five innings. The Yankees were desperate for a win but they could not get it and are falling back in the AL East everyday. With the victory the Mets remained in contention in the NL East and need to keep the pedal to the metal to catch the Philadelphia Phillies.

Omir Santos, Gary Sheffield and Fernando Tatis supplied the offense for the Mets as Sheffield and Santos supplied home runs and Tatis had an important RBI. For the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez knocked a home run and Derek Jeter came through with an RBI single. That was al they could get started against Nieve and the Mets bullpen. The Yankees needed their fortunes to change in a hurry and it seems that luck was behind them on Friday night. They stunned the New York Mets in the opener of the subway series. In a wild game the Mets were leading 8-7 with two outs in ninth and two runners on. Alex Rodriguez skied a popup and slammed his bat down in disgust. Francisco Rodriguez began celebrating his victory and the Yankees base runners routinely continued to run around the bases. But the game was not over as Louis Castillo made a dismal error, dropped the ball and two runs came in to score as the Yankees came way with another walk off victory on the season.

It was a victory that the Yankees desperately needed and a loss that the Mets could not afford. The Mets are now five games back in the NL East while the Yankees managed to hold ground in the AL East even though the Red Sox won another game. There was more than enough offense in the game with Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira and Gary Sheffield all going deep as the teams combined for a total of 17 runs. Neither starter, Livan Hernandez or Joba Chamberlain, was able to come up with a quality start. Even Mariano Rivera was unable to get runs off the scoreboard.
With John Maine going on the disabled list, the Mets will send out Triple A starter Fernando Nieve on Saturday June 13th. Nieve hasn’t started a major league game since 2006 and will have to battle a very powerful offense. The Yankees will send out Andy Pettitte to the mound. Pettitte is 6-2 on the season and looks to right the Yankees ship on Saturday. WatchLiveBaseball.com will have all of the action live and without delay and you won't want to miss it. Mike Lowell capped off the victory with a sacrifice fly and Jonathan Papelbon sat down the Yankees in the 9th inning. The Red Sox have now jumped out to a two game lead in the AL East division and the Yankees are sputtering once again.
