The New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox series will get underway on April 4th as the 2010 MLB season gets underway with a bang. Both teams have made formidable changes in the off-season and will be gunning for a championship this year. The Red Sox brought in ace start John Lackey who will be sure to face off against the powerful Yankees this week, while the Yankees picked up Javier Vazquez as a 5th starter and Curtis Granderson to patrol the outfield.

This opening series of the 2010 MLB season could give a lot of insight into how these two teams will match up all year long and what their new acquisitions will bring to the field. Can the Yankees once again match their expected output although they didn’t make as many major moves as possible? Will Lackey be the difference for the Red Sox behind Jon Lester and Josh Beckett? How will new role players such as Brett Gardner fare with full playing time?

If either team gets a jump up on the other one and can come away with a big series win, it would set the table for a hard fought battle in the AL East standings all season long. Both teams will look to pick each other apart but will also be looking behind them to watch out for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Yankees used four home runs to leave town with a 5-3 victory and are now up 6 games on the Rays. Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira all went deep, but the tough tests do not end here for the Yankees.

While the Red Sox were unexpectedly quiet during the off-season, the Yankees increased their salary by leaps and bounds. The addition of powerhouse first baseman Mark Texeira and all-star pitchers C.C Sabathia and A.J Burnett had the team coming into the season with higher expectations that ever before. The Red Sox themselves stuck to the character and role players that they have built their team around over the years.

Now that the season has begun the teams are heading in two completely opposite directions. The Red Sox are coming off of a complete drudging of the Baltimore Orioles as they handed them a 12-1 loss. On the other hand the Yankees have been struggling mightily to meet their pre-season expectations. The have been blown out a number of times including a demoralizing 22 to 4 defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Indians. While big free agent acquisitions Texeira, Sabathia and Burnett have not completely disappointed it seems that the chemistry of the team is almost non-existent.
