The Minnesota Twins have now lost two games straight to the New York Yankees and it doesn’t seem that anyone can stop the Yankees right now. The good news for the Twins was that they competed and were not embarrassed as badly as they were on Tuesday. While they lost by a score of 10-2 on Tuesday, they were in the game until the end on Wednesday and only lost by a score of 4-3.
AJ Burnett was on his game and lead the Yankees to yet another victory as they are slowly creeping their way back to the top of the AL East. The Yankees jumped out to a quick start in the game with 3 runs in the second inning backed by 2 RBI’s from Bret Gardner. Burnett was roughed up for two runs in the third but settled back in for the rest of the game and has proven that he is becoming one of the most dependable starters in the league. Nick Swisher and Alex Rodriguez also added an RBI each, although the Red Sox won as well so the team could not move closer to the top of the division. The Twins will look to bounce back on Thursday, July 9th or else they risk falling further behind in the AL Central.
On Thursday, July 9th the Yankees will turn to Alfredo Aceves who has moved into the starting rotation thanks to an impressive 4 innings against Toronto last week. The Twins will send out the inconsistent Francisco Liriano to try and prevent a sweep at the hands of the Yankees. It will be a tough start for Liriano as the Yankees bats are really coming alive. It will also be interesting to see how Aceves handles the role as a starting pitcher. C.C Sabathia put together quite a good start for the Yankees on Tuesday as the team jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Thanks in large part to the middle of the order as mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and Nick Swisher each contributed an RBI early on in the game.
