First let's take a look at the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, which are sitting at the top of the AL East with 26 wins and 11 losses. This team were down at the bottom of the rankings for the first ten years but then they came back after a rebranding with a vengeance. They started with James Shields, Matta Garza and Jeff Niemann, David Price and of course starting pitcher for this upcoming game Wade Davis. This gives the Rays a great starting rotation that is full of raw talent that they hope will come through on the field.

The Tampa Bay Rays came out strong and tried to make it as interesting as they could, but just did not have enough to hold on against the New York Yankees on Sunday June 7th. A day after a big victory over the powerful, AL East leading Yankees, the Rays could not hold a lead and eventually lost 4-3 on Sunday, moving them back in the divisional race.

The New York Yankees have become the comeback team of the year in 2009 winning a number of games by coming from behind and putting together a streak of walk off victories. Joba Chamberlain pitched 6 effective innings and only allowed three runs, but was not as good as his counterpart Matt Garza who only allowed 1 run over five innings in a very quality start. Things fell apart for the Rays in the eighth as they allowed a bases loaded walk and then were the victim of an error that tied the game but could have been an inning ending double play. Mark Teixeira scored the tying run on the error and Alex Rodriguez came across the plate to take the 4-3 lead right before the end of the inning.

Mariano Rivera was lights out in the 9th inning as usual to get his 13th save of the season. The Rays have to be disappointed with their effort in the game as they could have moved within 3 games of the AL East lead but let the game slip away thanks to walks and errors. They will try to bounce back when the two teams go at it again on Monday June 8th. Andy Pettitte will take on Andy Sonannstine of the Rays in a very important game for both series. The New York Yankees started slow but have been on a tear recently and lead the AL East over the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Rays, but by a very small margin. Their upcoming series with the Rays that starts on Friday, June 5th is going to be extremely important. If they can sweep the Rays they will have a comfortable lead in the division. However Tampa Bay is not going to let that happen. If the Rays could sweep the Yankees, then they would be looking at being just a game or two away from taking over the division lead, something they have been striving for all season.

Price will be facing C.C Sabathia in the first game of the series, followed by Matt Garza taking on Joba Chamberlain and Andy Sonnanstine and AJ Burnett battling it out. Jeff Niemann will take on Andy Pettitte in the fourth and final game of the series.
