It is official. The New York Yankees have the number of the Toronto Blue Jays and have now won five games straight against their division rivals. The great start that Toronto got off to this year seems to be coming to an end. The Jays have now lost three games in a row in the current series and are in danger of being swept in the 4 game series and sent spiralling down to the bottom of the AL East. On the other hand, the Yankees are in fine form heading into the All Star break and look like they could catch the Red Sox sometime soon for first place in the division.

On Sunday both team’s offences exploded as the pitchers were not on their game. However it was the Yankees that came out on top by a score of 10-8. Hideki Matsui and Derek Jeter led the way. Jeter had 4 hits, including a two run home run and Matsui also hit a home run and had a total of 4 runs driven in. Alfredo Aceves came out of nowhere to shut down the Jays over the last four innings as he only allowed one run in the latter innings. It was another devastating loss for Toronto as Brett Cecil was disappointing on the mound. Cecil was forced to start thanks to yet another injury to the team’s starting rotation. It appears that Toronto’s run to the top has come to an end, and that New York’s is just beginning.

On the final game of the series, that will take place on Monday, July 6th, Ricky Romero will try to garner some dignity for the Jays. The Yankees will send veteran Andy Pettitte to the mound. Both pitchers have had very promising seasons so far but Romero will be tested quite a bit against the powerful Yankees. Pettitte is quite capable of shutting down the Blue Jays and has done it quite a number of times in the past. Saturday provided an incredible game on July 4th. The Yankees came away with yet another walk off victory on the season and the Blue Jays had their hearts shattered, and possibly their playoff hopes as well. The New York Yankees pulled away in the 12th inning of their game against Toronto as Jorge Posada hit an RBI single for the 6-5 victory.

The win was huge for the Yankees as they continued to move a little bit closer to the Red Sox and pushed the Blue Jays further down in the division. If the Jays cannot turn things around soon then they will be on the outside looking in by the time the 2009 All Star break comes around. Toronto got a strong start from Roy Halladay and some offence from the likes of Adam Lind and Alex Rios but it was not enough to come out with the win against Chien Ming-Wang. They need to come out strong on Sunday, July 5th or the Yankees may just run away with the Wild Card this year.

On Sunday the Yankees will send out Joba Chamberlain to face Brett Cecil in a match up of two promising, young pitchers. Cecil has been roughed up quite a bit in a few outings this year and Chamberlain has been on top of his game for the most part lately. It will be a tough game for the Blue Jays but an exciting one at night. On Friday night the Yankees came out strong and backed a solid start by AJ Burnett to put away the Blue Jays by a score of 4-2. Burnett only allowed 6 hits over 7 innings and has been nothing short of spectacular over the past month. He has really started to prove that he is worth the massive contract he signed in the off-season. The Yankees used home runs from both Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez to secure the victory even though Brian Tallet pitched well for Toronto. The Jays were just unable to get anything started offensively as Alex Rios was the only one who could get anything done.
