Now one gave the Washington Nationals a fighting chance as they entered their series against the powerful New York Yankees. However on Tuesday they proved they could compete and on Wednesday their hard work paid off as they edged out the Yankees by a score of 3-2. John Lannan came out strong and gave a dominating performance against the team that he grew up idolizing and Adam Dunn supplied the necessary offense on Wednesday June 17th. Dunn launched a monstrous home run to get the offense started and Lannan did the rest. Lannan took a no hitter into the fifth inning of the game and eventually allowed only four hits in over 8 innings pitched. Aside from Dunn, former Yankee Nick Johnson knocked a two run triple to ensure the victory over the Nationals in a very exciting game.

The good news for the Yankees was that they got a very promising start from struggling pitcher Chien-Ming Wang. Wang lasted five innings and allowed three runs to lower his ERA that was at an inflated 14 plus. The Yankees tried to make yet another comeback in the 9th inning as Johnny Damon smashed a solo homerun and Mark Teixeira followed with a single. However, they could not get anything more started and the Nationals will look to build on the victory in the rubber match of the series on Thursday June 18th.
On Thursday the Nationals will send out unproven starter Craig Stammen, who is 0 and 2 on the season. In return the Yankees will send Joba Chamberlain to the mound. Although many people and MLB fans predicted that the Yankees would walk away with a victory and possibly blow out the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, they were in for a battle. After a slow game, Anderson Hernandez took Yankees starter C.C Sabathia deep for a three run homerun in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Possibly the best surprise for the Nationals was the quality start that they got from young Shairon Martis against the powerful New York Yankees. He only allowed two runs, until the Yankees broke out for 2 runs in the 7th inning to take the lead. However that was more than enough for the Yankees to come away with the 5-3 victory. The Nationals could get nothing going after the three run homerun, but will look to build on their strong start on Wednesday June 17th. The Nationals proved that they can play with even the best teams, given the chance and would love to come away with a few wins against the Yankees.

The New York Yankees will look to keep fighting to catch the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday June 17th as they send the struggling Chien-Ming Wang to the mound. If Wang does not come up with a decent start there is a chance that the will be moved out of the starting rotation after going 0-4 with an ERA of 14.34 so far this season. Matching up against Wang will be John Lannan for the Nationals. Lannan has showed glimpses of talent and ability so far this year but has also been hit pretty hard in a few games. Overall he has a record of 3-5 with an ERA of 3.51. Pretty impressive considering how much the Nationals have been struggling to hold offenses down overall this season. With all the excitement surrounding the Washington Nationals drafting young star Stephen Strasburg and the early season Ryan Zimmerman hitting streak, a lot of people have forgot to check the standings and where the Nationals sit. It really is not a pretty sight as the Nationals are twenty games back in their division and have only been able to scrap together 16 wins on the season, compared to 45 losses. While the present is bleak, there is a lot of hope for the future for this young team, and they have the raw talent to compete in every game they play.

Whether they will show up against the powerful New York Yankees is an entirely different question however. The Yankees are surging and are coming off a massive 15-0 win over the New York Mets and are looking forward to the "relaxed" series against the Nationals. The Yankees have been involved in constant battles and bitter rivalries in the last few weeks and should be able to calmly play baseball without too much media attention in this series. However that does not mean that the action will not be exciting as the Nationals love to play the role of spoiler and the Yankees are still desperate for some very important victories.
The Nationals will send promising young pitcher Shairon Martis to the mound who is an impressive 5-1 on the series. However he will have his work cut out for him in shutting down the Yankees and facing off against superstar C.C Sabathia. Sabathia is only 5-4 on the season but has really been proving capable on shutting down teams in his last few starts.
